Hi friend!

Happy March! Can you believe it's already here?

And with it, we have a new newsletter and a brand new health topic we’re diving into! This month, we’re talking about something super important for each and every one of our students: body image.

Welcome to the Teachers’ Lounge

We're trying out a new newsletter format, giving us more flexibility to share insights, resources, and exclusive content—especially for Project School Wellness Curriculum members. You can also visit our newsletter homepage to browse past editions (just getting started!) and connect with other educators!

Now, let’s get into today’s topic: body image.

Why Traditional Body Image Education Falls Short

For years, body image education has focused on:

  • Self-esteem building

  • Positive affirmations

  • “Everybody is beautiful” and "Love Your Body" Messaging

… And while this is all well-intentioned, this approach misses something crucial—body image isn’t just about appearance or self-esteem.

It’s about the complex relationship students have with their bodies, which impacts their well-being, confidence, and academic engagement.

What Is Body Image? Understanding the 4 Key Aspects of Body Image

Dive Into the Four Components of Body Image!

The Classroom Reality We Can’t Ignore

Think about your students right now. How many of them...

  • Skip PE because they’re uncomfortable changing in the locker room?

  • Avoid class presentations to stay out of the spotlight?

  • Wear oversized clothes regardless of the weather?

  • Decline participation in activities?

These behaviors reflect deeper issues that affect academic and social development. It’s more than a confidence problem—it’s a body image issue.

Let me explain...

What is Body Image?

At its core, body image is simply the relationship you have with your body. It affects how students see, feel, think, and act regarding their physical selves. Understanding these four key aspects can help us better support our students!
