A Tool for Rating Body Image: The Body Image Continuum

Connect

Hey there, BFF!

Welcome back to The Teachers' Lounge, where health educators come to Connect, Learn, and Thrive!

I’m so glad you’re here! Today, we’re diving back into body image and a game-changing tool: the Body Image Continuum.

What is the Body Image Continuum?

Body image isn’t just about loving how we look—it’s about how we feel and connect with our bodies.

Some days, we’re in sync. Other days, we struggle!

This tool helps students understand where they stand and how their relationship with their body can change. Watch the video below to learn more about the Body Image Continuum!

Using the Body Image Continuum with Self-Management

This tool is awesome because it pairs so well with the Self-Management Skill Cues: Pause, Reflect, and Act. It’s a little moment for students to practice self-compassion (and let's be real, we need it too!):

  • Pause: Ask students to consider their current relationship with their body.

  • Reflect:  Where do they fall on the continuum? What influences their perspective—media, family, self-talk? Awareness without judgment is key.

  • Act: Guide students toward small steps to improve their body relationship, practicing self-compassion, or focusing on what their body can do for them.

This is just one piece of the puzzle—more ways to integrate body image into health skills are coming soon!

Final Thoughts

What I love about the Body Image Continuum is how it shifts the focus from how we look to how we feel about our bodies, and it’s a total mindset shift.

Honestly, I’ve used it on myself too! It’s so powerful to stop asking if I like my body today and instead ask if I’m at peace with it. This simple change in perspective is what leads to body neutrality—a much more lasting and healthy mindset.

We’ll dive deeper into this in our Body Image Video Series, including the difference between body neutrality and body positivity!
