Body Neutrality vs. Body Positivity
Hey there, BFF!
Welcome back to The Teachers’ Lounge! Get ready because today, we’re continuing our Body Image Series with another topic that can truly shift the way we help students see themselves.
Last time, we talked about the Body Image Continuum—how body image exists on a spectrum. Now, let’s dive into two key mindsets: body positivity vs. body neutrality and why neutrality is the real game-changer.
What’s the Difference Between Body Positivity and Body Neutrality?
It’s easy to think these two are the same, but they’re actually worlds apart.
Body positivity tells students, “You are worthy because you’re beautiful.” It’s an upgrade from body negativity, but it still centers worth around appearance.
Body neutrality, on the other hand, says: “You are worthy. Period.” It shifts the focus away from looks and reminds students that their value comes from who they are—not what they look like.
And that shift? It’s the key to helping students truly live at peace with their bodies.
