🎬 We Love a Good Video to Enhance Our Lessons

Hey Friend,

Ever have one of those days when you feel like your students just aren't hearing you? I swear I could tell my 8th graders the same thing FIVE DIFFERENT WAYS and they'd still look at me like I'm speaking another language.

But show them a video from someone else saying the EXACT SAME THING? Suddenly they're nodding along like it's revolutionary information. đꙄ

But hey, if that's what works, I'm all for it! So I've rounded up five health videos that explain concepts way better than I ever could on my 4-cups-of-coffee, running-on-fumes teaching days.

Let These Videos Do Some Teaching For You:

  • How to Rate Body Image - A non-cringey look at body perception that won't make your students tune out
  • ARAT - Assess Your Relationship with Alcohol and Other Drugs - Perfect for that "am I at risk" conversation that teens need but resist
  • Why People Use Drugs - Breaks down the social, biological, and psychological factors without judgment
  • ATOD Cultural Perception - Shows how media and cultural messages normalize substance use
  • Mental Health vs. Mental Health Disorders / Mental Illness - Clarifies the difference in a way that reduces stigma (and by the way, I prefer "mental health disorders" over mental illness)

Just hit play and enjoy that magical moment when students engage with content that isn't coming from you! It's not that they don't love us... it's just that sometimes they need to hear it from someone else. (And honestly, some days I'm grateful for the voice break!)

If these videos are helping your students, you might be interested in my complete units that include these concepts:

  • ATOD Unit - The goal of this unit is not to tell students what they should or shouldn’t do in relation to ATOD. Rather, the intention is to equip students with functional knowledge and skills that will empower them to build a healthy relationship with ATOD as they critically assess their relationship with ATOD and make ATOD-related decisions that enhance their well-being.
  • Body Image Unit - Through engaging activities, discussions, and self-assessment tools, students will gain practical tools to improve their body image, self-esteem, and overall well-being. They will explore the factors that shape their body image and learn how to challenge negative thoughts and behaviors.
